MORRISSEY

Years Of Refusal

(Polydor / Universal, 2009)

New album of soft-voiced darkers Morissey came out on 16th February, althought is should be out in October last year. Album is called, somehow typical Morrissey, „Years of Refusal“. It is announced more then a month before with perfect first single „I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris“, which is devoted to Paris and his „rock and steel“. Although many are trying to dig out that addicional symbol, to me it is enogh to realize it just like onother Morrissey song about furstrating lust for love that didn’t came true, which in this case is transformed into a city-fascination – nothing odd that Paris came on list, after on first single from last album we admired Rome and Italian cinematography. Song got additional commercial when Morrissey and band took picture naked for album cover, covered only with 7 inch vinyl on strategic places. Photo is that what found its place on album cover, nice psychologisation combinated with great melodies and to his ear so great voice that lengths throught whole album, and makes it worth of attention. Although like whole it is not best of best that he ever sang, Morrissey here made a great job: „I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris“, „When Last I Spoke To Carol“, „That’s How People Grow Up“ – which is with „All You Need Is Me“ already was out last year on “Greatest Hits” album – “Sorry Doesn’t Help”, “One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell”, and probably intro song “Something Is Squeezing My Skull” could be found on some future best-of.  Same sounds like possible new all time favorite for many fans, although I personally have to admit that is one of less interesting songs on album. In general, I dare to claim that other half of album (if we don’t count great devote to Paris) is much better then first half. All in all, album that deserves attention.
