Music icon, human rights and freedom activist, Woodstock participant, ‘the queen of folk music’, legendary Joan Baez, honored Zagreb Student Center with unforgettable musical evening, also the last one of her 60-day mini European tour. Sold out hall, mostly filled with older generation of fans, with Baez nostalgicaly remembered the 60’s; years of Woodstock, Dylan, Lennon, The Band, Steve Earl, Cohen, The Animals whose tracks were skillfully combined in the set and mixed with two beautiful spanish songs – ‘Mi Venganza Personal’ and ‘Gracias a la Vida’ and several of her own, which were unanimously welcomed by audience singing along with her.

She, with a long scarf around her neck and an acoustic guitar illuminated by violet light and singing the immortal songs of her friends, lovers, mentors and idols like ‘Imagine’, ‘Suzanne’, ‘The House of the Rising Sun’, ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ and ‘ Forever Young ‘, just like she stood with all of them on that Woodstock stage half a century ago and symbolized freedom, love and justice. Joan Baez, at 74 may no longer have the strength, but sharpness surely remained the same whether she is singing in Spanish, political songs, gospel, country or traditional American songs.
But the moment of the evening occurred when she announced that she was told that all of us surely know the next song. Expecting something from Dylan, it’s little to say that we all gasped when she started to sing in fluent Croatian Bijelo Dugme’s ‘Ima neka tajna veza’. On stage next to her was a girl who sang with her a couple of duets and an excellent two-piece backing band with whom she also danced cheerfuly.
This was truly beautiful, sentimental and romantic evening with the most sensitive, but at the same time the sharpest female tongue of American folk music.
