Interview: Vedran Levi
Venia tahnks to Cmar Net for consigning the interview !
It has been four years since last Rammstein album. Band is back with 11 new songs, from which announcing single was released called “Pussy” whose video can be seen but only ones with a proper age, because it is rated with famous “XXX” sign. Many will find this video inapropriate, but it is about new Rammstein, and something special, not nesessary positive was expected. New album “Liebe ist fur alle da” will be released on October 16th. Thanks to Aleksandra Adamovię from Universal Music, we were able to talk to guitarist Paul H. Landers. I was excited waiting for the call, but of course, non time is enough for the questions that were prepared, especially because Paul was answering on German, that was simultaly translated…I should learn German!!!)
1) Recently you released your single from the upcoming album, the song “Pussy”. The album is out soon, as the tour also. I suppose you are all excited in the band?
PAUL H. LANDERS: Yes, we work on the album for a long time and we are happy it is finally out and everything goes forward. Album was done even before summer and that’s why we feel a deep relief because everything takes another step.
2) How was the album recording?
PAUL H. LANDERS: The recording itself wasn’t a problem, although we did a little mistake by studio choice but that’s another subject…. when it is about song writing and composing there were pretty enough nerves loosing. For me this if for sure one of the most demanding albums.
3) As album producer here is again Jacom Hellner, it seems there is a special chemistry between you?
PAUL H. LANDERS: Yes, when we were recording there were some insecurities and wondered will it be something from the whole thing, how to do this or that. There was pretty important to us to have a person like Jacob included into the album. We knew how great he works with Till, he knows technics well, how to get a great sound to get a good album. This time we didn’t want to experiment with song production so that’s why we turned to Jacob.
4) The new album “Liebe ist für alle da” is recorded in the USA, why so far, couldn’t you find a good studio in Germany?
PAUL H. LANDERS: We always record our albums far away from Germany so we can be concentrated mostly on recordings and not to be disturbed by appointments with the dentist or accountant, and when we go out of Germany we go somewhere where the climate is warm. It works well so far. This time we had and idea to go to America because we never recorded there before and as we don’t like to repeat ourselves this choice was a logical. The studio we had in plan in the first place is in Los Angeles near the sea, and unfortunately it didn’t work, so we needed to satisfy ourselves with alternative which was simply awful. The studio that fits us needs to have a possibility to accommodate nine persons who will live there during the recordings. So, the studio with nine separated rooms, and there isn’t many studios like that in the world so our choice is limited.
5) In your opinion what is the difference between this and previous albums?
PAUL H. LANDERS: This album is a bit harder and let’s says a bit “metal”. We have tried to leave beside all sounds we needed and leave only those important for the song. The album is “multicolored”, the more transparent and it’s not filled by sounds and fits the time we are now in.
6) The song “Frueling in Paris” is in Franch, how Till managed the lyrics?
PAUL H. LANDERS: Around the world we are often in situation to meet different languages. That reflected in our work. It just happened.
7) The song “Pussy” is the first single from the album, is there a special reason for that choice?
PAUL H. LANDERS: To choose the single is always hard. This time we lean the opinion of people around us who reacted on the song. We could keep some typical Rammstein expression and not to shock our fans, but this time “Pussy” was the song with the most humor in it, although the album is typical Rammstein.
8) What is your favorite song on the album?
PAUL H. LANDERS: I’d say there is one song I dislike, but I won’t say which one because it is not important. Everyone has some favorite song, the same as the one which isn’t that one…
9) What the band thinks, what is like the new album in the end?
PAUL H. LANDERS: I have to admit, we were a bit surprised how good it turned to be, because on some points we weren’t sure it will work out. We are really happy and satisfied how, beside all troubles, everything tuned out to be good and we are happy we didn’t do some album disaster like latest U2 or Depeche Mode albums. As the band you can never know the final product. You always do your best and try to do everything in a right way, but sometimes it doesn’t work. We had luck, for now, when it is about that.
10) Rammstein will start the tour in November in Portugal, what are your plans after the European part of tour?
PAUL H. LANDERS: We will tour the next free years and we’ll see for how long we will endure. We will for sure reach also the East Europe, it is our plan. If we survive these three years we’ll see what will come next. There is a plan also for “The Best Of” album we need to do it concerning the contract with record label, because we already got the money from them, although we are not the band that likes that kind of releases.
11) I suppose “Best Of” album will contain also some new songs?
PAUL H. LANDERS: Yes, I think so.
12) What do you prefer, to play on the festivals or your own shows?
PAUL H. LANDERS: I prefer festivals, because if it is a good festival and I’m lucky to see some great bands I have a chance to learn something and we don’t play a long set like on our own shows. Then I like to be a listener, and during the week we are free when we play on the festivals. I’m already looking forward to that. While, for example, our drummer hates Christoph Schneider hates festivals, because he hasn’t enough time to warm up like on our own shows so he plays “on cold”, he really hates that.
13) I hope there will be the chance to see you also in Croatia?
PAUL H. LANDERS: I was never into your country, but many people I know were there and came back enthusiastic. So I’d like to come.
